Do you know what the Texas state tree is? Well, if you guessed the pecan tree you’re right! Texas officially adopted the Pecan tree as the official state tree in 1919. Even more amazing is that the pecan is the only native nut to the U.S., and fossil records from Texas show that the native Pecan tree was here long before humans were. The pecan tree can grow to be more than a hundred feet high and live for almost 1,000 years. Texan’s know how to pick a tree!
The pecan is packed full of 19 healthy vitamins and minerals. It should be no surprise Texan’s love the pecan so much we’ve adopted it as our state health nut in 2001. This healthy nut has been known for:
- Heart Health: 60% of the fat in a pecan is monounsaturated and 30% is polyunsaturated. These percentages show the pecan has very little saturated fat and no trans fat at all, which gives your heart the healthy boost it needs to stay strong.
- Vitamin E: The pecan is full of Vitamin E, which is a natural antioxidant. Antioxidants have been known to fight diseases like Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, and cancer. So a pecan a day can definitely keep the doctor away.
