Cinco de Mayo – 5th of May – is a Mexican holiday that commemorates the day the Mexican army defeated the French army at the Battle of Puebla during the Franco-Mexican War (1861-1867) on May 5, 1862. Cinco de Mayo has evolved over time from a holiday that was typically found in Puebla, Mexico to large celebrations found in both Mexican and the United States. Today, Cinco de Mayo festivities are full of parades, mariachi music performances, and great Mexican and Tex-Mex food.
Texas is one state you can count on to have some of the best Cinco de Mayo celebrations. For instance, Cinco de Mayo in Austin begins on May 4, 2013 in Fiesta Gardens and ends May 5, 2013 at the Speakeasy with a hot pepper eating contest. Ouch!
