Dr. Pepper Incorporated 90 Years Ago

Texas is known for some amazing things like: football, BBQ, the Alamo, Texas Longhorns, and just sheer size. There’s one more thing that Texas is famous for and whenever it’s consumed it brings a smile to the face of the person drinking it. Can you guess? If you said Dr. Pepper, you’re right. Texas is known for creating the famous Dr. Pepper.

62drpepperIn 1885 Wade Morrison, owner of the Morrison’s Old Drug Store in Waco, Texas, hired a pharmacist named Charles Alderton. When Mr. Alderton wasn’t busy filling prescriptions, Morrison put him on soda fountain duty. Now you have to remember in 1885 the soda fountain didn’t simply spit out a soda of your choice like today. Each soda at Morrison’s Old Drug Store was hand made starting with the flavoring, then adding the sugar, and finally carbonating the water. Each soda was individually crafted for the customer.

Alderton loved applying his skills in pharmacy to the amalgamating and mixing of certain fruit extracts and sweeteners to make the perfect carbonated drink. One of Alderton’s famous soda concoctions was the hit among all the patrons that came to Morrison’s drug store. Morrison named that particular blend Dr.

Pepper, after Dr. Charles T. Pepper, a physician and pharmacist for whom Morrison had worked in Virginia. It was during this time 127 years ago that Alderton’s soda fountain experiments created the drink we still enjoy today.

July 6, 1923, however, was another major milestone in the history of the Dr. Pepper soda empire. It was on that day 90 years ago in the city of Dallas, TX that the Dr. Pepper Company was incorporated. Today, Dr. Pepper/Seven-Up company headquarters and plant can be found in Plano, Texas.

Another thing Texas is famous for is its heat! So drink some Dr. Pepper and beat the heat, and as you drink remember the Texas heritage that comes from that simple can of Dr. Pepper.
