Texas Seasonal Fruits and Vegetables

Good food makes for a great time. Food brings people together like few other things can. If you can share a meal with someone, you can share much more! Also, there is nothing better than the feeling of eating good food that comes with no buyer’s remorse a few hours later when your belly gives you feedback on your meal decisions. So, with Fall right around the corner (and with it, the ultimate food fest!) we thought it would be helpful to provide you with a list of Fall foods that are in season for the Texas area. You can also check out this website which not only provides lists for in-season foods for Texas, but it also gives recipes to go along with those fruits and vegetables. It even splits the in-season lists down to half-month intervals that really allows you to target the time of the Fall that you may be thinking about. Also, check out this site allows you to see a more year-round picture of the seasonal varieties that Texas offers. For the Fall (meaning Sept.-Nov.), here’s the fruits and veggies to keep in mind:

  • Apples
  • Beets
  • Broccoli (Oct/Nov)
  • Cabbage
  • Cantaloupes
  • Carrots
  • Celery
  • Cucumber
  • Grapefruit (Oct/Nov)
  • Grapes (Sept/Oct)
  • Honeydew Melons
  • Mushrooms
  • Peanuts (Sept/Oct)
  • Pears
  • Pomegranates (Oct/Nov)
  • Pumpkins
  • Raspberries (Sept/Oct)
  • Spinach (Oct/Nov)
  • Watermelons
  • Winter Squash
  • Tomatoes

One of the difficult things about Texas being so massive is that the climate difference between North and South or East and West can be pretty significant. So factor that into these lists. The foodgeek site linked above also includes neighboring states in its lists, which helps to give you an idea of what your region of the state may produce. Also, when the weather is nice be sure to visit your local farmers market in order to pick out some of the freshest food. Check out this Farmers Market website that lists where all the certified markets are in Texas and when they are open during the year.

Finally, remember that a good meal deserves to be shared with good friends. So, when you gather your friends together for a feast be sure to include Texas Treats in the festivities with some of its snack items that can get your party started!
