How to Host a Fun, Festive Cinco De Mayo Fiesta!

Cinco de Mayo is a Mexican holiday that commemorates May 5, 1862, the day the Mexican army defeated the French army at the Battle of Puebla during the Franco-Mexican War (1861-1867). Cinco de Mayo festivities have evolved very much over time! Starting as a holiday celebrated mostly in Puebla, Mexico it has expanded to highly anticipated fiestas in both Mexico and the United States. Today, Cinco de Mayo is celebrated with parades and mariachi music performances. It’s no wonder it has become a day we all look forward to…it’s filled with good times and great food. We all love great food and fun, don’t we?!

This weekend host your own Cinco De Mayo party and make it one to remember! With these great tips from Martha Stewart’s Mexican Fiesta Party Ideas, you’ll be able to put this party together in no time. All you’ll have to do is open up your front door and let the good times begin!

  • Make Mexican Paper Decorations – Grab some vibrant-colored tissue paper, a crafty hole punch, scissors, string and glue! “Papel picado is the Mexican folk art of paper-cutting. The colorful, lattice-like designs, traditionally cut into tissue paper, are made to celebrate religious festivals and national holidays. Mexican craftsmen use punches, knives, hammers, chisels, and scissors to cut holes in the tissue.”
  • Make Fiesta Flower Arrangements – Think bright colors! Grab some flowers, a vase and get to arranging. “Zinnias, salvias, dahlias, and China asters — all originated north of the border,  but their dramatic, almost-explosive colors are sure to make your guests feel as if they’re dining on the beaches of Cancun or at the Mazatlan carnival.”
  • Make a Piñata – What party isn’t made better with a delightful game of hit the piñata! And, though Martha Stewart does everything from scratch, for this one, we say BUY ONE!
  • Don’t Forget the Chips & Salsa – Whatever you do, don’t forget to provide what your guests have really come for – delicious food! The Texas Treats Chips and Salsa are the perfect complement to a beautiful flower arrangement, paper decorations or even snacking in between hits of the piñata.
